Chop the Roots, Kill the Tree

What are your “tree” (3) roots?

That’s a lot of roots. Photo by Leonie Vreden on Unsplash

Well, for me, it’s Religion, Relationships and Reading:

Religion is straightforward. I believe in a singular God, and Christ is it for me.

Relationships? Are not as 1+1 = 2, simple. It’s more of an equals three, ahem. But anyway, recently, I’ve had what I consider to be my first serious relationship. But that’s not what I’m here for. I also found a “drill sergeant” and rejuvenated my relationship with my family as well. My grandma regularly calls me, and my family sends me food often. Not cause I need them to, but because they want to. It’s comforting to know they think of me often. Who says “out of sight, out of mind” is a thing, eh?

The above are obvious roots, sources of life, and growth avenues that encourage me to step into my own person and formulate my unique perspective on this world and its sudden pandemic growths and economic scares. Phew, that was a wordy sentence.

So why is Reading on that list?

For the avid readers out there, you feel me, and you relate for those of us that find reading 3-minute articles to be too many words, understandable by the way in this day and age of images that say thousands of words.

Hmm, I may replace that with a self-drawn meme. (Shameless self-plug. I like rabbits and privacy.) You may replace that with YouTube. What do you watch exactly? And if you were aware that your consumption affects the way you think and relate to the world, would you still spend hours on tea-spilling?

Meh, whichever helps us enjoy this stretch of time we call life.

But the point stands, are you filling yourself with inputs that you’d like to see as your output? In 2009, the average American ate 34gigs of Data per day. That was already an increase of 350%. Yet 2020 sees 1.7MB created per second by every existing human on average. Tell me that’s not a scary thought. That amounts to 146,880MB created by humans per day now (as in 2020) versus the humble 34,816MB consumed in 2009. Calling it “a lot of data” is a gross understatement—couple this with a Neuroplasticity concept popularised and researched by Dr Caroline Leaf. The human mind has only the limits divinely given. I’m not interested in encouraging another Babel.

According to my word counter, that’s 404 words you’ve just consumed, and here’s another 300,000 words (arbitrary number) more, courtesy of Jared A. Brock, esteemed Medium periscope-using writer.

A side note:

I would recommend reading the actual book over using an app like Blinkist or perusing book summaries when you’re looking to glean completely from a book. Using such services to find a good book to read is incredibly wise. However, we miss out on great ideas many a time because we took the path more easily travelled. Here’s to many many more books we love; and many more words for us to capture.
